Boards are pieces of lumber less than 1-1/2" thick. Nominal sizes are listed as 1x4, 1x6,...etc. The actual thickness of 1x Boards is 11/16" to 3/4". The actual widths are the same as Dimensional Lumber and usually 1/2" to 3/4" less than their nominal widths. Boards also include a relatively recent addition to dimensioned lumber sizes - 5/4 lumber. This so-called "5/4" lumber uses the nomenclature of the rough sawn mill to infer a product which is thicker than standard 1x boards. The actual thickness of 5/4 boards is 1" plus or minus 1/8".
